Ahimsa means nonviolence.
The prefix, ‘a’ means non or without. The root word, hiṃsā, means violence.
Ahimsa is the first of the five yamas, or restraints.
Ahimsa is much more than physical nonviolence. We can practice this yama by being kind with our thoughts, words and actions to our bodies, minds and spirits, as well as toward other living things.
