How Negative Ions Work
According to the company, Himalayan Salt Lamps, “Negative ions are produced naturally by thunderstorms, waterfalls, and the ocean. That’s why we feel refreshed and energized in these environments. Salt crystal lamps offer the same benefits.”
And that’s why we moved to the ocean! 😉
Negative ions will cancel out the ions emitted from all of our electronic devices (TV, computer, cell phone, kitchen appliances, etc) and create a better living space for our mind and body. One source says, “Once they reach our bloodstream, negative ions are believed to produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the mood chemical serotonin, helping to alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our daytime energy.”
“When the salt crystal rock is lit and heats up, a reaction occurs with the crystal, causing it to emit negative ions. These ions clean the air and relieve symptoms of Asthma, Allergies, Migraines, and Snoring, while neutralizing all odors. They also offset the negative effects of electronic smog produced by computers, televisions, and other electronic devices. It is recommended that you leave the lamp on 24 hours a day to receive its full benefits.
Over 250-million-year-old salt crystals are hand-mined in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains. They were once part of the earth’s most pure and pollutant-free primal ocean. When the ocean was naturally dried by the sun’s energy these crystals were formed; they were then subjected to extreme temperatures and pressure, creating a superior crystalline structure. Most of the coloration you see in the crystals comes from naturally occurring iron (red) and manganese (yellow). Each and every crystal is entirely natural. Himalayan salt is the worlds’ most mineral-rich, pure salt on our planet.”
Are Salt Lamps Right for You?
Some of you are definitely on board with the thoughts I’ve expressed so far, and some of you may not be sold yet. The way I see it, is, even if the only benefits I get are:
- a soft, inviting glow
- romantic mood setter
- night light
- cool looking piece of decor (which may or may not lead your friends to actually taste the lamp like our did)
I’m still getting more than I do without having a salt lamp. And if they do in fact cleanse the air and
reduce allergies, I’m all the more for them! For me, they absolutely increase my mood! I’m a huge fan of a simplified yet home-y living space, only adding components which are visually and aromatically pleasing (while still being useful), without too much clutter. That’s not asking a lot, huh? 😉 Salt lamps have replaced all but one of the lamps we used to have in our main living spaces (because I just can’t part with the elephant lamp pictured above) and always spark conversation when our guest visit.
I’ve purchased our salt lamps from various places: Target (over a year ago, no idea if they’re still in stores), Home Goods and of course, Amazon. We give them as gifts on the reg, too. The tealight holders are less than $10 and a great way to start if you wanna give salt lamps a try!
