We rode with our friends (who also live in Vegas) to San Clemente to camp at the San Onofre campgrounds. Our friends have a camper and offered us a ride with them + a bed in their camper. We took them up on the offer and left Thursday (June 4, 2015) evening after everybody was done with work. Disclaimer: I knew The Surfer had a ring because a text message that wasn’t meant for my eyes was seen by my eyes by complete accident and total innocence! Anyway, I had known for a few weeks that he had the ring but had no idea when he was going to propose … And yes, he knew I knew he had the ring, but it was never discussed.
We enjoyed an interesting ride to the campground. With traffic + only being able to drive 55-65 mph, we got in much later than expected (I think around 2:00am) and pretty much hit the hay. Friday morning we woke up and drove into town for breakfast across the street from the pier in SC and to get some groceries for grilling later that night. The four of us were relaxing on the camper’s deck when another couple arrived after work on Friday. We ended up packing the whole set-up up and moving to a different spot so everybody could be next to each other. Great idea! Friday night we grilled salmon and paired it with a delicious salad, had lots to drink, played guitar, made s’mores, laughed a lot and passed out. It was perfect!
Saturday morning we all contributed to breakfast. The guys made bacon on the grill while the girls made scrambled eggs and fruit salad. We had plans to go into town again on Saturday for the beach. Where we were camping you could see the water, and hike down to it, but it was a rocky beach and not a great spot for laying out or surfing. Of course, before going to the beach we had to stop at Pedro’s Taco’s so everybody could get lunch. It’s a delicious hole-in-the-wall place where you walk-up (or drive thru) to order and there are picnic tables outside.
Getting engaged was absolutely nowhere on my mind at this point, as I was just ready to lay on the sand under the sun! While we were waiting for our food, I leaned up against The Surfer for a hug … I thought nothing of this, but he told me later he freaked out because I brushed against the ring box which was in his board shorts! And our friend, Kristin, said she was nervous because the ring box bulging in his pant’s pocket was obvious. Like I said, I was ready for the beach. 😉
We all got situated at the beach, and about 45 minutes later Bruce and Meredith arrived. They live in SC and had obligations before they could make it to the beach. Everybody was relaxing (the surf wasn’t very good) and soaking up the rays. I remember Dave making a big deal about why Meredith brought her nice camera to the beach, and I was like, “Meredith takes great photos! She loves taking photos!” Little did I know, she had her good camera there on purpose!
I was snoozing (for real, drifting asleep) when The Surfer said,
“Hey, baby! Check out this really cool seashell I found!”
I ignored him, as I was trying to rest, but he was persistent and asked me to look again. Bruce was filming the entire thing and Meredith was taking pictures. The Surfer started tugging on my ankle a bit and I eventually turned around. I’ll let the pictures tell the story from here. 🙂
All of our friends who were at the beach (and some elsewhere) knew he had planned it. Bruce and Meredith and Dave and Janet brought bottles of champagne to celebrate. It was so perfect! And so completely us since we’re always running to the beach any weekend we can! Later that night our friends took us to a sushi dinner to celebrate.
I feel like I am the luckiest girl in the world! I’ve never known a love like his and I feel privileged to have this ring on my finger. (I would marry him without a ring!) He has shown me what love looks like and feels like and makes me happier than I ever imagined I could be. I am thrilled to become his wife!
